Episode #691: Transitioning From Academia To Private Practice, feat. Dr. Sumi Raghava

Today’s guest, Dr. Sumi Raghava, PHD, joins me to talk about her powerful transition from academia to full-time private practice. She shares the motivations behind her decision, the challenges she faced along the way, and the key moments that shaped her journey.

We dive into what it was like to balance academic responsibilities while building a trauma-focused, cross-cultural therapy practice—and what ultimately led her to go all-in. Our conversation covers everything from strategic planning and marketing to niching and the emotional risks (and rewards) of stepping fully into private practice.

About Dr. Sumi Raghava, PHD:

I’m Dr. Sumi, (she/her/hers) and I’m a licensed psychologist practicing virtually and in Brooklyn, NY.
My goal is to help you feel more connected to yourself and others, and empowered to seek out the life you want. I’m warm, curious, and engaged. Let’s work together to help you get unstuck in work, relationships, or other areas where you need support. Therapy is your space to be yourself, and I am BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ affirming in my practice.

I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from New York University and completed my doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Fordham University. I’ve worked in a variety of clinical settings including hospitals, community based clinics, substance abuse treatment programs, university counseling centers, and forensic facilities, before entering private practice.

I also spent 10 years as a college educator, and walked away from tenure to dedicate myself fully to private practice.
I enjoy working with high achieving professionals and helping folks derive satisfaction and joy from work while having healthy boundaries to protect from burnout.

My experiences as a clinician, scholar and educator are forever intersecting, and I believe this keeps me fresh and dynamic. In the classroom as in the therapy office, connection is key, and I prioritize building a safe and accepting environment as we partner to work through your challenges.

When I’m not working, you’ll find me spending time with family and friends, cycling, doing yoga, cooking and binge-listening to podcasts.
