Episode #710: The Biggest Missteps In Private Practice, feat. Jenn Lowe

Allison and guest Jenn Lowe, M.A., LPC, LCMHC, RPT, sit down to talk through the common missteps therapists run into in private practice. They cover everything from setting clear financial goals to choosing marketing strategies that stay focused instead of scattered, along with how to seek the right kind of professional support as your practice grows. Jenn also shares her perspective on the importance of boundaries in day-to-day clinical work and the value of building strong professional networks. The conversation wraps with a look at Jenn’s own academic path and teaching interests, and how those experiences shape the way she approaches private practice.

About Jenn Lowe, M.A., LPC, LCMHC, RPT:

I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor and Registered Play Therapist based in Michigan, where I live with my husband, our three kids, and our two dogs—Ellie, a yellow lab (yes, I love the movie Up), and Fenway, a miniature dachshund named after my husband’s favorite baseball team, the Boston Red Sox.

I spent 15 wonderful years in North Carolina, and while I love Michigan, I still miss the southern warmth. I’m happiest near the water—whether I’m swimming, fishing, or just floating on a boat. And I’ll admit it: I don’t think I could survive without chocolate. The Bahamas are my happy place!

My Work: I help women, children, and teenagers who are driven and capable but feel overwhelmed by constant worry or intrusive thoughts. Many of my clients struggle with anxiety, OCD, separation anxiety, social anxiety, phobias, and generalized anxiety disorder.

I have a special interest in helping people overcome emetophobia (the fear of vomiting)—something that might sound unusual, but I find it deeply rewarding to help clients regain confidence and freedom from fears that control their lives.

What I love most about my work is seeing people reclaim their peace, whether that means finally going to the grocery store without panic, trying new foods like sushi, or cutting down on time spent in rituals or compulsions. Every small victory matters.
