Episode #769: Advocacy in Practice with Maya Benattar

In today's episode, I talk with Maya Benattar, LCAT, a licensed creative arts therapist in New York, about what happens when you discover your entire license type has been left out of major mental health legislation and you decide to do something about it. Maya shares how she built a coalition that became a full 501(c)(3), hired a lobbyist, and is fighting to get LCATs the insurance coverage mandates and diagnostic privileges they deserve. We also talk about how she keeps her practice sustainable while doing all of this, including why staying out of network has given her the flexibility to show up for the advocacy work without burning out completely.

About Maya Benattar, MA, MT-BC, LCAT:

I’m a music therapist and psychotherapist in New York.

I specialize in helping women soothe their anxiety, heal from difficult childhoods, and embrace their sensitivity. I know what it’s like to live with the pressure of constant anxiety, being “too sensitive”, and always being the good daughter and the responsible one.

I’m here to tell you that you deserve to be loud, messy, sensitive, and angry - without apologizing for any of it.

What many clients like about me is that I show up as a real person - curse words, loud laughter, and comfy clothes - so you can feel safe to show up too.
